CHEROKEE STRIP SPECIAL OLYMPICS

The Little Saloon That Could!

Al's Saloon once again raised an incredible amount of money for Cherokee Strip Special Olympics.  Almost $9,000 was donated by those at Al's Saloon.  Thanks!  From all the athletes, coaches and family members!

Mandatory Coaches Training

Mandatory Coaches Training for Athletics has been completed for Cherokee Strip. There are currently only 15 coaches that are certified or are in the process. Those coaches not attending a certification clinic will not be allowed to enter their athletes in Track and Field (Athletics) this year at Vance or Summer Games. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS MADE FOR ANY REASON.

There are still a few clinics being held in other cities coaches can attended. Please call the state office to receive a list if you have misplaced yours.

Congratulations to those coaches who took the time for their athletes so they can participate in Athletics!

A little information about our program

Special Olympics Oklahoma develops and administers a year-round sports training and competition program throughout Oklahoma for nearly 9,500 athletes ages 8 years and above.

Programs across the state are administered by Area Management Teams comprised of volunteers who work year-round to plan, organize and conduct sports training and competition events for athletes and coaches in their area.

The Cherokee Strip Special Olympics Area is comprised of Garfield, Grant, and Kay counties in Oklahoma. It serves over 500 athletes who compete locally in eleven competitions ranging from Bowling to Art and Music. In addition Cherokee Strip Special Olympics sponsors a Family Picnic and Sports Banquet.

Benefits of Participating in
Special Olympics

Special Olympics contributes to the physical, social and psychological development of its athletes. Participation in this program brings benefits to Special Olympics athletes including improved physical fitness and motor skills, greater self-confidence, a more positive self-image, friendships and increased family support. Athletes carry these benefits with them in their daily lives at home, in the classroom, on the job and in the community. Families are strengthened and the community increases its understanding, acceptance and respect of these individuals.

Adopt a Special Olympics Athlete

Howdy from the Cherokee Strip Special Olympics crew!  On behalf of this amazing group of athletes I would like to say thanks so much to the many of you who made dreams become a reality.  Over the past nine years many of you have helped with scholarships, entry fees and uniforms.  Without your donation, many athletes would have missed out.

While I am sure you have hear of Special Olympics and what a wonderful organization it is, you may not be aware of the following local facts:

  1. The Cherokee Strip area consists of Garfield, Grant and Kay counties.

  2. There are currently over 120 volunteers who run the different programs.

  3. The Cherokee Strip area is able to offer more events than any other area due to amazing financial support from people like you!

  4. There are over 350 athletes registered in our area, ranging in age from 6-82.

You can probably imagine, as with any other sporting events, Special Olympics come with entry fees.  Athlete registration, equipment and training are the focus of our area funds.  Athlete registration is by far our greatest expense.  Many of our athletes attend both Winter and Summer Games.  For these games, registration is $5.00 per athlete and $62.00 for room and board.  Unfortunately, many of our athlete's families can not afford this kind of expense.  With your generosity, however, they WILL be able to attend.  By adopting as many athletes as you can, you will make a difference in their lives.  Several options are listed below and we feel there is a category everyone can comfortably afford.  Please choose the one that's best for you!
